ARE AEDS (DEFIBRILLATORS) REQUIRED IN DENTAL OFFICES?

This is a question that seems to be arising more often during my consultations with dentists. First let me provide some background information: AEDs (i.e. Automatic External Defibrillators), when applied to a patient that is unconscious and not breathing, can “reset” one’s heart by providing a life-saving shock at the appropriate time. The goal of proving electrical therapy to someone in cardiac arrest is to transform a chaotic, non-perfusing heart rhythm back into a Normal Sinus (i.e. perfusing) Rhythm. AEDs have proven to be quite successful at reviving a patient if they are applied to the victim quickly (i.e. less than five minutes) and are used in conjunction with effective CPR.
As technological advances allow dentists to perform increasingly complex procedures in the comfort of their offices, patients–and dental regulatory bodies alike–expect that doctors are prepared to handle any medical emergencies that may arise. Furthermore, the staff and patrons of neighbouring businesses often look to the staff of dental or medical offices for guidance during medical emergencies.
The short answer to the original question is: no; AEDs are not required in basic dental practices…yet, anyway. However, for the reasons outlined above, proactive dentists are recognizing the benefits of investing in AED units now. Units have become more affordable in recent times (starting as low as $1,000) and provide great peace of mind for the dentist and his or her staff. Moreover, proudly displaying an AED unit in the dental office goes a long way towards inspiring confidence in patients during this time of increasing competition in the dental field.
Contrary to popular belief; one does not require special training in order to use an AED (hence the word “automatic”).
